Allegation of Assault at Football Match Discontinued

Published - May 08, 2024

Foster & Coleman recently acted for a client following his arrest at the Queens Park Rangers v Millwall match in January of this year.

The allegation was that, having been refused entry to the game, our client proceeded to grab a steward by the neck. Following his arrest, our client was interviewed and fully denied assault, claiming that in fact he had been assaulted by the steward and had merely acted in self-defence.

The case was set down for trial and repeated requests were submitted to the prosecution for disclosure of the CCTV, which purported to show the incident. When it was eventually served shortly before the trial date, what was shown cast considerable doubt on the allegation put forward by the complainant and prosecution witnesses.

As a result, the Prosecutor reviewed the evidence and made the decision to discontinue the proceedings.
